I SHOT HAPPINESS

--

Like a song that’s been left unsung,

or a sentence held in your throat

My truth hides, though it has found

a baneful way to cope

Some fear the mirror,

fear the knife,

or wish upon a different soul

But in my truth,

silent and confined,

I fear not what comes and goes

Trepidation is pointless,

as if a second kidney of the brain

Worries about an inevitable mess,

outcomes as inevitable as rain

In my truth, beyond it’s mask

a different fear shines its light

Not one regarding future what ifs

or self hatred beyond one’s self,

but one stemmed from life,

the beautiful simplicity of it

The sun shines when I want the moon

I emerge with breath when I want to sink

Happiness shows its face,

so I shoot it with a gun

Why can’t the world be silenced from song?
